*Haircare In The Winter Months

As someone with dyed grey hair (and so bleached underneath) that I blow dry and straighten three or four times a week, winter is not my friend. My hair really struggles with the cold, it gets really static-y and flyaway from wearing scarves and coats and greasy much quicker from the constant not quite rain we have frequently. I have to dry it fully each time I wash it (in the summer I’d part dry it and then let it dry naturally) and I have to straighten it more than usual too. More hair falls out than normal and I just get cross (and usually dye it back to brown in a strop!) This year, though, I am DOING THINGS DIFFERENTLY.

Use the right shampoo for you

As well as long, frizz prone, quick to get greasy hair I have psoriasis, and at the moment it is terrible on my scalp. So instead of gorgeous smelling shampoo I am using one that works for my scalp. The one problem with my current shampoo, though, is that whilst it’s good to my scalp, it makes my hair even more flyaway. So, I need to…

Use a good conditioner

My hair is like straw if I ever don’t condition it. A good conditioner is much needed and I try to leave it on as long as possible-sometimes when my hair is really bad I put conditioner on, let it soak in for twenty minutes, then shampoo and then condition again!

Use a hair mask

A good hair mask can really give my hair a boost when it’s in bad condition. When I’ve got no coloured dye on it I use coconut oil overnight, but that can fade colour so badly so when my colour is on I use a non colour fading mask. It just adds moisture to my hair and makes it feel and look better.

NEVER use a brush on wet hair

Using a brush on wet hair can make it fall out more. I use a wide toothed comb to comb through mine once when I’m blow drying it, then I don’t attempt to brush it at all until it’s dry and straight. I lose a lot less hair this way.

What’s your winter haircare tip?
