Making Lipsticks with MDMflow

Hello!

A week or so ago I received an e-mail from Liberty at MDMflow, asking me if I fancied coming to Harvey Nichols Beauty Bazaar in Liverpool to meet her and the MDMflow team, and watch them make lipsticks. Now, I’m not from Liverpool, it’s an hour or so drive for me and as the event was at 4:30 I nearly said no-but I decided to go, and meet Jenny and Codie beforehand for some shopping. I’m glad I did (and not just because we raided the Korean skincare section in TKMaxx and spent a fortune in Primark!)

All of the best events start with a glass of fizz (which I don’t like, so never drink-but it’s still nice to have the option!) and this was no exception. Liberty gave us all a glass and invited us to take as many photos as we wanted (of course, we’re bloggers!) and I spent a happy twenty minutes or so doing just that-you can see from the many photos included in this post that I found it hard to choose my favourites.

Florence (Flo) the founder of MDMflow, introduced herself to us and told us how much she loves what she does-she’s really into science and is pleased that she gets to create her own lipsticks and mascaras by using her knowledge gained during her degree. I have to say, it’s cool to see female scientists so I was already a big fan before I saw her work her magic.

Flo told us how she named the company (Flow is obviously a play on Flo, and her mum calls her madam which she suspects isn’t meant as a compliment-so she’s owned it and created MDMflow) and then she asked us to choose two colours as a group, so that she could make those lipsticks for us. Well-I think we could have been there all day, but eventually we agreed on a nude, and a bright pink, as we’d fallen in love with a neon pink pigment she had. We also asked for some sparkle in our pink, using the iridescent shimmer powders she’d shown us.

Then the magic happened. Flo melted down some beeswax, used because it’s nice and moisturising on the lips, and then added a white base. She then added some of the brown powder, mixed them together, and swatched the colour for us. It was too pale, so she added more brown. We were happy with the colour, so she added two drops of rose oil to finish (this makes the lipstick smell nice and is also good for moisturising the lips). Flo then poured the mixture into her moulds-which, as she showed us, were very fancy as they imprinted MDMflow onto every lipstick-cool!

After what seemed like ages (why does it always seem like forever when you’re excited about something?) the lipsticks were cool enough to be removed from the molds. Flo carefully removed them and then placed the lipstick into the gorgeous gold bullet packaging. Our first lipstick was born.

We were all lucky enough to be given one of the lipsticks once they were done, before watching our next one being made. The process was the same, but this had LOADS of the neon pink pigment and lots of glitter. We were given one of these once they were made, too.

Oh, and the best bit? We got to name them! So, without further ado, I’d like to introduce you to….

Snog A Blogger (Nude) and Unicorn Barbie (Pink) aren’t they gorgeous?

I can’t wait to wear them, I’m so excited!

If you like these lipsticks, I’m sorry to say you can’t actually buy them, as they are very limited edition-only 13 made, one for each blogger. However, you CAN buy all of MDMflow’s permanent range, and I recommend you do-we swatched them and they’re awesome. I have my eye on a few.

I left the event happy with my two new lipsticks, tired from standing around most of my day, and excited to write this post-we said that for some events it’s difficult to think of what to say, but this one was something different-I’m all about that. As we left, Flo and Liberty said that if we’re in London, we should pop them an e-mail and go and spend a day in the lab with them-I am so down for that! You’ll be hearing from me next year, ladies, when I have some holiday at work!

Have you tried any of MDMflow’s products? Do you like the look of any of them? What do you think of my new lipsticks?
