I’m just about to go back to Amsterdam (on a mini cruise, so I only have a day in the city-which is a shame) and planning for the trip has reminded me that I’ve not shared this post with you yet. Like every trip, it’s good to know a little something about your destination before you go and so I like to share the things I’ve learnt about each city with you guys. Hopefully it’s helpful!
Amsterdam is a city full of cyclists, and they don’t stop for anyone
I lost count of the number of times I nearly ended up in a canal because a cyclist came speeding along behind me, and then rang their bell loudly. It always made me jump, I didn’t get used to them in the three days I was there and I’m sure I really annoyed them too. Watch out for cyclists, and for goodness sake get out of their way quickly!
Street Food is the one
We actually ate most of our meals in restaurants, which was fine-but I wish I’d taken advantage of the street food Amsterdam has to offer more. Everything from chips with mayo (or a gorgeous cheese sauce) at little stalls, to deli’s selling pizza slices, sandwiches and pasties, and massive waffles. I plan to eat ALL THE FOOD when I go back for the day, and it’ll all be street food. I’ll do a post on what I ate when I’m back.
Planning the things you want to see is a good idea
We spent a lot of time wandering up and down the same couple of streets around Centraal Station, and I wish I’d gone with an itinerary so I could see more. Public transport is easy and frequent-there are trains and trams going all over the city-and I think I could easily see everything I wanted to in another three day trip, if I go on my own. Maybe next year!
The Sex Museum is actually alright
I wrote a post about the sex museum which you should totally read-upshot is, I would recommend going. It’s very silly, and very touristy-but it’s a fun way to spend an hour or so.
Have you been to Amsterdam before?
