My bedroom, since I moved in three years ago, has been redecorated three times, because I was really struggling to make it the calm, peaceful room I needed. Because of my fibromyalgia my sleep is terrible on a good day and a messy, cluttered room makes this ten times worse, so it was important that I got my bedroom right. The fully white room I started with was okay, but it had no personality, and the cobalt blue wall I painted behind my bed was beautiful, but too loud. Finally, after a lot of planning, I’m getting my bedroom looking how I’d hoped.
The colour scheme
I wanted pastels to match the rest of my house, and I was conscious that, as my partner is here most of the time, pink was probably a bit too girly for our bedroom. A yellow or a peach felt too bright to be calm and I really wanted lavender in my office, so I chose a mint green for the walls in the end. For the floor, I considered replacing my grey carpet with solid wood flooring and a pretty rug but decided I didn’t have the budget for this at the moment, so I kept the grey carpet.

The bedding
We initially spent a lot of time fighting over the duvet as we were both so used to sleeping alone, so buying a new king sized duvet for the double bed was a worthwhile investment. A bigger duvet meant bigger bedding and I’d seen some gorgeous pastel and white striped sets in H & M, so I went for the lavender version. I intended to buy the pink one later but I’ve now waited too long and they don’t have it, so I’m still on the hunt for a pink and white striped bedding set to use half the time.
My partner and I regularly joke about beds with lots of ‘show cushions’ that get moved off the bed when you sleep on it, so I’ve resisted the temptation to add lots of show cushions, and at the moment our bed just has my pale pink weighted blanket on top of the striped duvet. I don’t love the look but I do need the blanket to sleep better, so until I figure out something better the blanket stays, and it’s not awful, it’s just not perfect. Hopefully I can find a pretty weighted blanket cover at some point.
Storage
I have three Ikea Pax wardrobes in white with mirrored doors, which store clothes, my makeup and skincare and a box of ‘to slim down into’ clothes too. The Pax range is great as you can add all sorts of shelves, rails and drawers wherever you want using the pre-drilled holes, and there’s even attachments you can get to make a jewellery drawer or a shoe shelf if that’s what you need. One of mine is full of shelves, which in turn are full of brightly coloured plastic mini crates from Primark in a rainbow of colours-I may have gone for a calm, peaceful room overall but I needed some hidden colour somewhere!
I have white Ikea Alex drawers at either side of the bed, with the usual socks and underwear in them, and my bedside fan at my side. Eventually I want to cover these with a funky patterned vinyl that ties in with the rest of the room, as the plain white is too boring for me, but I’m still trying to decide which vinyl I want for this.

Adding personality
Adding personality to my bedroom is nosomething I’m still struggling with. I don’t want the room to have too much going on, as that’ll impact my sleep, I’ve not even got a TV in there, but I don’t want a bland, soulless room either. I’ve added a large print in colours that blend well with the mint green walls, I’ve added a ‘you look gorgeous’ decal to one of the wardrobe doors and I’ve got a large Ficus plant in the room too, but I’m still looking for more.
The aim is a gallery wall above my bed, with photos of landscapes or cityscapes I’ve taken whilst travelling, and carefully chosen books and a photo frame or two on top of each bedside table. I do want curtains that match the vibe of the room too, but I’ve not found any yet so I just have blinds, and I wouldn’t mind some sort of fairy lights over the bed. Fingers crossed I can sort all of this soon and finally tick off another room as finished.
What’s your bedroom decor like? Are you a calm bedroom sort of person, or is yours more wild and crazy?
