I really enjoy writing food review content and I’ve realised that reviewing chains makes my content more useful for all readers, so going forward reviews will be a mixture of chain places and Leeds restaurants.
This week, I’m reviewing The Real Greek, as J and I went for date night at the weekend. We went to the Gloucester branch, and from the website it looks like most of their branches are southern (with the exception of Sheffield, Manchester and Liverpool!)

We hadn’t booked a table and were able to walk in, but I wouldn’t recommend relying on being able to do so. It’s always best to book somewhere you’re excited about. It was 7pm on a Saturday night that we arrived so it was a gamble.
The restaurant was about two thirds full with some big groups, and the table next to us had to chase their food twice having waited for an hour, but we only waited 15 minutes. We’d clearly timed our arrival well.

For drinks, J chose an alcohol free beer (which ended up being 0.5% so not quite alcohol free) and I had a peach iced tea, which was delicious. After our main course they brought a second round of drinks which we hadn’t ordered, so they gave them to us for free as they’d been opened. I think they were just a bit busy and a bit frazzled.

We chose Halloumi Popcorn (dressed with lemon, honey and oregano) and Flatbread for starters, the flatbread was good and the popcorn was amazing. I’m still thinking about that popcorn! It was crispy on the outside, soft on the inside (halloumi can easily be too dry, but this was not) and the honey and lemon made it really tasty.

For our main, we both had Souvlaki. I chose chicken and J chose lamb and, honestly, I wish I’d gone for the lamb too. Mine was good, his was really good! We had a large fries and a rice to share and my only criticism is the rice arrived a while after the rest of the food. Again, they were busy, but it wasn’t ideal.

For dessert, we split Baklava and added a scoop of raspberry sorbet. The restaurant gave us the baklava for free because we’d had to wait earlier, which was great service, especially as we didn’t wait that long.

Overall, I enjoyed the food at The Real Greek and I would go back. Yes, the service wasn’t perfect but the staff were kind and friendly, the wait wasn’t bad and everyone makes mistakes.
