Spending a day in Liverpool

February 25, 2023 Comment : 1

Liverpool, home of The Beatles, Superlambananas and Scouse, is one of my favourite UK cities and I recently headed back for a day to show J a few reasons why I love the city. I’m lucky enough to be close to the city, just over an hour’s drive away and I used to go over there regularly-spending a day in Liverpool was so much fun. This post is talking about some of the things I’d recommend for your first time in the city, or if you wanted to hit the more touristy spots, where you should go.

Art and culture

Liverpool has some brilliant museums and any day in the city should mean you visit at least one. I love the Museum of Liverpool, The Tate and the World Museum and I’ve visited all three a fair few times. The Beatles Story sounds like it’ll be a good one, although I’ve not made it there yet so if you visit, please let me know how you found it-leave a comment after this post or tweet me on @Insdelaurashead.

Checking out some of the modern art at Tate Liverpool

If you like to find out about the people in a city, the city’s recent history and that sort of thing, the Museum of Liverpool covers all that. It’s got fashion, football, famous Liverpudlians, trade union history and more, it’s really interesting.

The World Museum has a planetarium, an aquarium, dinosaurs and other bits so is less about the city itself but still good.

The Tate is full of art if that’s your bag, we got to see the Turner Prize 2022 nominees’ work-although some of it was wasted on uncultured me! You can easily see two or three of the museums in half a day, so you’ll have plenty of time to do more in the city if you’re spending a day in Liverpool.

Wander around the Docks

The Albert Dock, which is near the Museum of Liverpool and where the Tate is, is a gorgeous spot to wander around. There’s lots of little shops, coffee places, restaurants and although it’s likely to be cold in the winter it’s one of the best bits of the city.

You can also walk along the side of the Mersey, behind the Museum of Liverpool, and spot some of the Superlambananas that are around there. There’s plenty of them dotted around the city too, but if you’re just spending a day in Liverpool and want to see some quickly, the docks is the best spot. Make sure you check out Liverpool’s Magic Mountain whilst you’re there too.

Go street art hunting

Street art hunting is one of my favourite things to do in any city and Liverpool has LOADS. If you’re wanting to see a lot in a short space of time, I’ve written about finding the best Liverpool street art so definitely go and have a read of that. There’s lots more pieces dotted around the city though, so if you just wander, you can find plenty more. Please do let me know what the best pieces you found were, I’d love to see pictures-share them with me on Instagram, @insidelaurashead

Have some tasty food

Liverpool, like any city has SO MANY options for food. I highly recommend Baltic Market and I’ve written a Baltic Market review post you should check out if a wide variety of street food is your vibe. If not, there will absolutely be somewhere that takes your fancy.

Finish with drinks

Any good day out finishes with drinks, right? Head down to the area around the Cavern Club for a lively evening of music, cocktails and dancing in one of the many bars, just don’t miss your train home if you’re not staying over!

Have you been to Liverpool before? It’s a city I’d recommend everyone visits and if you’ve never been before and want to have a good look around, hopefully this post helped you out. Spending a day in Liverpool will definitely be the right decision.

It’s years since I was last in Liverpool. But I loved the docks – we had food & drinks there.
